Soldiers left Fort Ridgely in 1867 and one Sergeant Howard remained behind to attend to remaining duties. After 14 years, the garrison that once trained soldiers for the Civil War and remained intact after two attacks became a memory as many considered the frontier now farther west.  In time, area inhabitants scavenged and made use of wood, windows, hinges and even the granite and field stones to build their own dwellings.  This officer's quarters remains today only in foundation form.
